Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. - Hebrews 11:1

A book for all ages.

When a stray pit bull puppy shows up one summer morning, Dory and Bryan Davis could not have known, at the time, how their lives would change–their faith, their perspective, their heightened level of spiritual understanding–as the pup develops and grows under their devoted love and discipline.

After Pit Bull dies accidentally, Davis writes down the story so that she can have not only a written recorded memory of the pet who taught his masters so much, even as he was learning, but also to share those fundamental lessons of faith, trust, obedience and self-restraint with others.

Pit Bull died Saturday, March 18, 2006.

How difficult it is for me to remember that day in order to record it for you.

Easier it has been to tell of his arrival as a puppy. To tell of mishaps with ingesting Vaseline and of wrestling matches with Doggie and races through the house. Let me tell of his baby-chicken flop poses on cool floors in the summer, of scrub baths in the tub and of tricks like catching popcorn on the fly. A hundred pages I’ve filled and barely glimpsed the story of his life. Now at the end the final pages await the story of his death and my pen refuses the paper, my memories shut and beg to stay that way.

But I remember that someone asked me to write it. I remember how I told the story of his death, and one person responded by saying she needed to hear it. I only wish I could make a recording of that phone conversation, so I wouldn’t have to remember.

I suppose, though, that there is more than one person who needs to hear it. If others find hope in the story, too, it bears re-telling. In truth, I suppose I am the one who really needs to hear it told again.

In bravery he lived; bravely he died.

“Precious in the eyes of Jehovah is the death of his saints.” – Psalm 116:15
